Diabetic Neuropathy Clinical Research TrialsVolunteer for our clinical trials and research studies on diabetic neuropathyDiabetic neuropathy is nerve damage caused by diabetes. Diabetic neuropathy can cause numbness, pain and weakness to the hands, arms, feet and legs, but may also affect every organ system. There are different types of diabetic neuropathies, the most common being peripheral neuropathy which affects the arms and legs. Symptoms of diabetic neuropathy:
Diabetic neuropathy is diagnosed by the person’s symptoms and a physical exam. Tests to help determine the type and extent of nerve damage may include: Blood pressure Heart rates Muscle strength Reflexes Comprehensive foot exam Assessing vibration perception Nerve conduction study Electromyography (EMG) Quantitative sensory testing (QST) Ultrasound Nerve or skin biopsy Diabetic neuropathy affects approximately 50% of people who have had diabetes for at least 25 years. It is also more common in people over the age of 40 who are overweight, have trouble keeping normal blood glucose levels, have high pressure and high levels of blood fat. Diabetic neuropathy complications include foot injuries due to loss of sensation in the nerves of the feet. Small infections in the foot can go unnoticed until the skin and soft tissue breakdown and the foot becomes so severely ulcerated, amputation is the only treatment. Another complication is that motor nerve damage can lead to muscle breakdown and imbalance. There is no cure for diabetic neuropathy but there are treatments. The goal is to prevent the progression of diabetic neuropathy while reducing the symptoms. Treatments may include:
