Volunteer for our Crohn’s disease clinical trials and medical research studies

Crohn's disease is an inflammatory bowel disease of any part of the intestinal tract that can affect men, women, children and adolescents. Crohn's disease is characterized by inflammation or irritation of the large or small intestines.

Crohn’s disease may cause the following symptoms, often severe enough to diminish the quality of life for those who have the disease:

  • Abdominal pain, usually in the lower right area
  • Diarrhea
  • Loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting
  • Rectal bleeding
  • Weight loss
  • Joint pain
  • Anemia
  • Fever

Crohn's disease is diagnosed by a gastroenterologist through physical examinations, blood tests, stool samples, x-ray, imaging studies and endoscopy.

Complications of Crohn's disease may include intestinal blockage, ulcers in the bladder, vagina or skin, fistulas from the anus or rectum, and nutritional deficiencies due to the intestine's malabsorbtion of protein, calories and vitamins. Other possible Crohn's disease complications are arthritis, kidney stones, gallstones and liver disease.

No one knows for certain what causes Crohn’s disease although experts believe that it may begin when the body's immune system overreacts and causes inflammation in the intestines. The course of Crohn's disease can be unpredictable and is characterized by exacerbation of symptoms sometimes followed by spontaneous remission. Current Crohn's disease treatment consists of preventing, controlling and lessening the intestinal inflammation, providing nutritional support and treating pain, diarrhea and rectal bleeding.

Living with Crohn's disease can be difficult and stressful, and can impede your normal everyday activities. However, medical research and clinical trials are offering hopeful insights and innovative treatments to those who suffer from this often debilitating condition.
